Scenic Driving to San Diego, California

After two fabulous days at Disneyland we begin our day driving south on Interstate 5 towards San Diego, California.  It’s another beautiful sunny morning here in southern California.  The temperature is in the low 60’s.  Our drive from Anaheim to San Diego without stops will take less than 2 hours.

As we continue traveling south the highway turns to the west and begins to bring us closer to the California coastline.  The view of Palm Trees and the Pacific Ocean are right outside our car window now.  It is a breathtaking view indeed.  The great part of traveling is that you will never know what the next part of your journey will bring you.  We decided to stop in Dana Point, California to take some pictures and enjoy the view.

Dana Point is known for its beautiful beaches including Doheny State Beach and Salt Creek Beach.  Dana Point offers great sightseeing, dolphin and whale-watching cruises, and excellent surfing.  On the southern end of Dana Point is Capistrano Beach.  Driving along the coastal highway we notice on top of the cliffs many large beautiful homes overlooking the Coast Highway and Capistrano Beach.  Many celebrities are rumored to have homes here.

The next city we pass through is San Clemente, California.  It is located on the southern end of Capistrano Beach and it is has two state beaches, San Clemente and San Onofre.  The view of the sun shining, the sandstone bluffs, many large waves, and the pier extending far out into the Pacific Ocean is what we had envisioned a California Beach would look like.  Such a beautiful view.

Having taken in some spectacular views we continue our drive passing some other beautiful cities including Oceanside and Carlsbad.  Both are known for their beautiful beaches.  In Carlsbad we passed by Legoland California which has a theme park, a water park, and an aquarium.  It is based on the Lego toy brand.  It currently has one hotel, the Legoland Hotel California with another hotel, Legoland Castle Hotel opening in May 2018.  Here is a link if you’d like more information about Legoland California

After a little more than an hour we arrive in San Diego, California.  We discover that it is a very beautiful city.  It is located just north of the United States border with Mexico.  San Diego is said to be the 8th largest metropolitan city in the United States but it does not seem to be overpopulated.  We begin our visit with a stop at Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo.  Balboa Park is a large 1200 acre park that has a theater, museums, and the famous San Diego Zoo.  The zoo we found out has more than 3600 animals.  With a temperate climate providing cooler temperatures throughout the day we noticed the animals were more active here compared to other zoos we have visited in hotter or colder climates.

The most famous beach resort in San Diego, the Hotel del Coronado, was our next stop. The Hotel del Coronado was built in 1888 and has 680 rooms and 7 restaurants and is rated a AAA Four Diamond Hotel.  If you are planning a trip to visit San Diego, the Hotel del Coronado offers refined yet stylish attributes, extensive amenities, a high level of hospitality, exceptional guest service, and a beachfront location.

If you are a sports fan then a tour of Petco Ball Park is something you will want to do.  Petco Park is home of the San Diego Padres baseball team.  The tour includes a visit to a private luxury suite, the press box, the dugout, and the Padres Hall of Fame among other areas.  A panoramic view of downtown San Diego, of Mexico, and the Coronado Bridge can be seen from an observation level at the ballpark.

It’s now time for us to go to the Airport to catch our flight to Florida.  We passed by the Port of San Diego, which is only 2 miles from San Diego International Airport.  We saw a couple of cruise ships in port visiting for the day.  I think seeing San Diego as part of a cruise itinerary along with other cities in California and Mexico would be a great vacation.  With that being said, San Diego has so many things to do that a one day visit really only gave us a small taste of what San Diego has to offer.  Our impression is that San Diego is a beautiful city that we want to visit again in the future.

Although our visit to San Diego was short we are thankful for the experience.  Our visit to southern California was planned as a side trip from Las Vegas and it will always be so memorable for us.  The 70 minute non-stop flight from Las Vegas to San Diego, the scenic drive to Anaheim, California to visit Disneyland, the return drive along the California coastline, and a day in San Diego provided us so many memories.  It was well worth it.  We are thankful for the time we spent in southern California.  Seeing a destination provides memories that hearing about will never give you.
